Settle WWW Cycling Club

The Settle World Wide Wheelers Cycling Club was officially formed in 2001, but had existed informally as a group of Sunday morning riders for several years before that. Weekend cycle rides leave from Settle square on Saturday @ 1pm, and Sunday 9:30am (10am when poor conditions).

In the early years it was mainly a Sunday morning social ride, though it could be quick at times. The only competitive involvement was assisting with the LVRC Jim Armitage memorial road race which was held on the Bolton-by-Bowland course. In 2004 we introduced our series of 10-mile time trials, also held on the Bolton-by-Bowland course. These club events have proved increasingly popular.

In recent years sportives have become increasingly popular with members, none more so that the Étape du Dales, where we supply both riders and marshals. This event was very much the creation of our late secretaryStuart Holdsworth

From time to time we have been involved with campaign activity for the improvement of cycling facilities in the area. We have good reason to believe that the cycleway alongside the Ribble in Giggleswick originated with a suggestion from club members. An early discussion document that was presented to a cycling initiative by the highways department can be seen here. Unfortunately the map to which it refers seems to have been lost, but we believe that it indicated routes to the then Settle High School.

Following a proposal from the club, the highways department installed “Beware Cyclists Crossing” signs on the A65 at the junction at Gildersleets. The cycleway for avoiding using the A65 between Austwick and Clapham was also originally a suggestion from the club.
